Iron Hill Museum oral history recordings and transcripts

Abstract

The Iron Hill Museum oral history collection consists of 37 interviews (recorded on 59 audio cassettes) documenting the history of the Iron Hill School #112C, which was one of the African American schools built in Delaware with funds provided by Pierre S. du Pont. Additional interviews in this collection document life in the Iron Hill community and nearby Pleasant Valley, as well as education provided in a few other Delaware schools in Hockessin, Milton, and Claymont.

Abstract

This item is a 1935 autograph book that belonged to Edith Gerselda Lynch, a student in the class of 1937 at Howard High School in Wilmington, Delaware. The book contains signatures and messages from Lynch's friends, acquaintances, and family, including a signature from Howard High School teacher and librarian Pauline A. Young. The pages provide a glimpse of student life at a Delaware-based African American high school prior to desegregation.

Abstract Virginia Tryon Smilack is the daughter of the late Dr. Sager Tryon, former Vice President of the Claymont, Delaware School Board. During his tenure, the school board was the first in the state to desegregate a public school in 1952, two years before the 1954 Supreme Court decision of Brown v. Board of Education.
